Allergies Abound

The most common types of allergies in dogs and cats are inhalant allergies, flea allergies, and food allergies. The majority of allergies occur between the ages of 1-4 years of age. Symptoms may include feet licking/chewing, facial scratching, scratching around lower back and tail areas, recurrent ear infections, scabs or sores around the head and neck, especially in cats.
Let’s talk about food allergies! These require time to develop so most dogs and cats have been eating the offending food for over a year with no dramatic symptoms. Food allergies need to be addressed by choosing a protein and carbohydrate that your pet has not eaten before. So, buying a different brand of food is not always the answer. Ask the Salty Paws Team for more information on a food trial. Next week, we’ll talk about flea and inhalant allergies! Happy tails! Dr.Blessing
