At Salty Paws Veterinary Hospital, we understand that your pets are like your family. A missing dog or cat can be a terrifying experience for any pet owner to have to face. The best chance for a missing pet to be reunited with their owner is for him or her to be implanted with a microchip that a veterinary hospital or animal shelter can scan if they are found loose and picked up. This is why we highly recommend our clients to have their pets implanted with a microchip; to ensure their safe return. Once the implant has been placed between your pet’s shoulder blades, a scanner can read the microchip when it is passed over your pet’s back. The resulting identification code is what will connect your pet back to you. This is why it is very important to ensure that you register your pet’s microchip immediately after implantation and keep your information up to date with the microchip company if you should move.
The microchip itself is a very small device and is actually only about the size of a grain of rice. It contains a very tiny metallic piece, which sends out the microchip’s identification code. This piece is surrounded by a membrane, which makes the implant non-reactive and perfectly safe when it is placed under your pet’s skin. The implant is placed under the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades using a syringe. Even though the needle that is used to inject the microchip is large compared to that used for regular vaccinations and injections, most pets tend not to react any more than to routine injections. Once the microchip is in place, it should remain active and in place for the life of your pet.
We offer the most widely used microchip products to increase the chances of a safe recovery. To find out more information on our microchip implantation services or to set up to have your pet receive a microchip, please contact our office and a staff member would be more than happy to assist you.
